Goal Setting for 2025, Part Two: Actions, Roadblocks, & Celebrations
Welcome to part two of the goal setting series. If you have not completed part one, I recommend doing it first.
With your reflections and big dreams identified, consider specific actions to take you closer to what you want. I like to say: small goals, big results. The goal of your goals is to learn, to make progress, and to give direction. You are in control of your life, and this annual goal setting exercise helps you incrementally reach the big dreams you defined. Let's get started.
First, define one action for each of your big dreams.
Your dream might be to get a promotion, to go back to school, to run a half marathon, or to move to a new city. Lofty goals happen one step at a time. What is one thing that will move you closer to the outcome?
Using the above examples, here are actions to facilitate progress: talking with your boss about growth opportunities in January, deciding on two possible degree programs and completing applications by March, signing up for the half marathon in October, or narrowing down the field of places to live before June. These steps bring you closer to the dream becoming reality.
When you complete the one action, it leads to other small goals. For the half marathon in October, chart the training plan on your calendar. If you speak with your boss about growth opportunities, follow through on suggestions given to you. Goals beget goals. Keep moving toward what you want.
Next, anticipate roadblocks.
Every goal worth achieving will have roadblocks. The better you can identify them up front, the more likely you'll have the tools to overcome them. What will get in the way? How can you gift your future self now to overcome obstacles?
Monthly, check in on your progress.
Set a calendar appointment on the last Friday of the month to see how you're doing. What are you learning? What changed, and does the change mean the goal no longer serves you? You own the goals, and you know when they need to be modified. Give yourself permission to make updates as often as necessary.
Regularly, celebrate progress and growth.
Remember to set aside time for reflection and celebration. As you learn and grow, you become better, and you show yourself what is possible. Pause and take it in.
