How to Revise Versus Abandon Your 2024 Goals

Remember January?

It was an idyllic time. Everything was possible. You determined 2024 would be your best yet.

The year started, and things got in the way. The flu, the departure of a key member of your team, the personal issue that required a lot of your time. The goal worksheet you lovingly created sits in a file, or worse, in the recycle bin.

Time to get it out, dust it off, and use it to fuel your future growth. Take a moment to find it, and run through the following questions as you review each goal:

Why did I set this goal?

The why is the most important factor in goal setting. What did you think the goal would give you that you do not have now? It that still true? If the why for your goal no longer serves you, it is time to abandon the goal. If your why still exists, read on.

What were the major roadblocks that kept me from making progress toward the goal?

Sickness. Family responsibilities. Too much TV. It was hard. Be honest with yourself about the reasons you are not where you want to be (yet).

If I still want to do this, how can I prepare for future roadblocks?

Roadblocks will continue to show up, both the same ones and new ones. How can you anticipate them and get intentional about your response to them? This is a great time to check in with your boundaries.

Are there any new goals I want to consider?

January is not the only magical time to develop goals. March is pretty fantastic, too. What new things have popped into your mind since the beginning of the year? Is it time to trade some former goals for new ones? Go easy here and keep your total number of goals to a maximum of three.

Over 75% of 2024 is yet to come. What did you learn from the first few months, and how do you use the knowledge to grow? You have the power and ability to revisit your goals any time. Rather than walking away from your goals, use them as an opportunity to learn more about yourself and your changing preferences. You’ve got this!
