Awareness: Goal-Setting Begins Here

This series of blog posts focuses on the Awareness component of the Together Evolving model. To achieve lasting results, take one intentional step forward at a time.

Goals are incredible.  They instill a sense of purpose, and the journey to achieve them is as impactful as the outcome.  When you dream big and take action after action, you accomplish something you never imagined possible.  Or, you may dream big, take some steps, fall flat on your face, and wonder what happened (I can attest).

As a coach, I listen to leaders passionately share what they want from their career, relationships, and life.  I'm thrilled to hear the desire to learn and grow, and I know the journey to significant achievement is long.  Some leaders reach out for support when they become exhausted from the work, some may be ready to completely give up, while others are stuck and feel lost because of a few setbacks.

When we step back from the big goal and take time to bring a client to goal awareness, it helps propel them forward with clarity - either with the current goal and or with an entirely new goal.

Below are questions I use to bring awareness to the goal.  I encourage you to grab a journal, think about something you want right now, and run through them.  A cup of coffee or tea is a great companion as you ponder your responses.

Awareness Exercise: Goal Setting

What do you want to do, become, or experience?

Why do you want this?

Who you are doing this for?  (Hint: if the answer is not you, rethink the goal.)

What will your life look like when you achieve this goal?

On a scale of 1 to 10, how committed are you to achieving this goal?

If you are saying yes to this goal, what do you need to say no to?

What is the first step you need to take to achieve this goal?  (When you complete the first step, come back to this question and identify the next, and the next, and the next through achievement.)

If you invest time up front to define your future clearly, you will set and achieve goals that change your career, your relationships and your life. Coaching helps you get the clarity to uncover what you truly want.
